Pegasus Reviews the 2014 Neil Pryde Zephyr

At last, the rain had cleared, and I was able to finally take the Neilpryde Zephyr out for a ride. You might be wondering where Neilpryde comes from, and who they are. Neilpryde was started in 1970 as a professional sail maker for racing boats. Soon, they took the sailing world by storm making carbon fiber masts for racing boats across the globe. In 1982, they took windsurfing to a whole new level, with many professional athletes taking the top step of podiums all over the world. Today, are considered carbon fiber experts in the sailing industry, making carbon components for the racing boats you see in the America’s Cup.
In 2010, Neilpryde partnered with motorsport royalty, BMW, to create their first carbon fiber road bike designed through collaboration with BMW Group DesignworksUSA. The unique design and technology are an evolution of years of experience working with composites and a deep understanding of aerodynamic principals. But the primary focus is the same as with all Pryde Group brands – to elegantly engineer products that allow you to ride longer, harder and faster. Just like in the sailing world, Neilpryde seems poised to take on the road cycling landscape and make an immediate impact.

Now, back to the bike . The Zephyr is the brand’s Gran Fondo bike, a bike that can be ridden all day, and keep you comfortable throughout your ride. The Zephyr is decked out with Shimano’s brand new Ultegra 6800 11-speed group set. Rolling out towards Diablo Road, I immediately noticed, or should I say didn’t notice, any road vibration that you would normally feel on any other bike. The Zephyr was rolling on 28c Vittoria tires, perfect for crappy roads, and even the gravel roads you will undoubtedly find the further away from civilization you go. Eventually, I was able to find some chip-seal/gravel roads to take the bike over, and it felt remarkable.
The Zephyr is a very stable bike, with a longer wheelbase than the other bikes in the Pryde line up. This created a ride very similar to riding in a Cadillac, smooth and leisurely. As I climbed up Diablo Road towards Blackhawk, I tried time and time again to get out of the saddle and really hammer it. With the bigger tires it was hard to get a good jumpy feel, but instead, the Neilpryde is very grounded and more geared towards a slower, but smoother pace. I noticed that the bike wasn’t as effortless to get moving as their Alize or BuraSL models, but what it lacked in get-up-and-go, it made up for ten fold in just how comfortable the bike is and how well it holds it’s speed.
As I turned the bike downhill towards Highland road, the long wheelbase really came into it’s own. The Zephyr was extremely stable at high speeds, and very predictable in it’s handling through quick corners, and long, sweeping turns. When the road evened out, I was able to get into a good rhythm, and truly appreciate what this bike is, a perfect Gran Fondo bike. Once I snapped out of my usual racing-only mindset, I realized what Neilpryde was trying to create with the Zephyr. I could only hear the tires rolling over the pavement, and nothing else. The bike was so quiet! Every bit of road chatter was gone, creating a riding experience that is unmatched by any other bike in this category, at this price point.

Along with the silky-smooth ride qualities, the Zephyr turned heads out on the roads during my test ride. I continuously got questions about the bike, and there was always a comment about how smooth and clean the bike looks. They were right, the Zephyr’s tubes all flow into each other seamlessly. It looks just as comfortable and smooth as it rids!

In conclusion, the Neilpryde Zephyr fits riders perfectly who are looking for a bike that they can ride everyday, no matter the distance. Gran Fondos? Centuries? The Death Ride? Gravel Grinders, even??? Yes. It can really do it all. Plus, being equipped with Shimano Ultegra 6800 11-speed group set, the Zephyr mixes form with function. The Neilpryde Zephyr is more than just a pretty face, but a fantastic ride too! Want to try the bike for yourself? Come on down to Pegasus any day of the week and take one for a spin. In stock, we have X-Small, Small, and a Large complete bike in stock (I rode the Large model today). For those of you who are looking at a Medium, we have a frameset that we can build up to your exact specifications! Also, HUGE THANKS to Robb Wolf, our local rep, and US Brand Manager for Neilpryde for bringing these bikes our way!

Power Tap Wheel sets available to RENT

Why Train with Power?

As The Leader in Power no other brand has put as much effort into perfecting the concept of power-based training as PowerTap. Far more than just handing you the tool, we want you to understand the training process so you can get the most out of your training.

Training with Power

It's time to take the mystery out of training
It's no secret training can be confusing. Just remember it all comes down to balancing how much work you do with your body's response.

The Power Advantage

Most training systems only allow you to measure your body's response to the work. The actual amount of work you perform remains a mystery - or at best an estimate. Why is this a problem? Doing too much work means injury and overtraining risk. Too little means you're not getting the maximum benefits you want. When power is measured your training becomes that much more effective.

Having a constant measure of power helps you:

  • Establish your baseline fitness
  • Accurately measure even the smallest fitness gains
  • Quantify intensity, duration and frequency - instead of guessing
  • Prevent overtraining
  • Accurately measure energy use for nutrition planning
  • Pace properly for time trials or set yourself up for a successful run

Stop by the shop and take a set out for a ride. We have Joule units for you to use, in case you aren't using a ANT+ compatible Garmin.

Check here for more info.

Friday Ride

A Friday Ride. Typically Friday is my day-off. Since being a small business owner does not afford many days off, riding is rarely a part of the schedule. Luckily, on the Friday you see before you, a friend asked me on a ride and I took the invitation. A humid post spring rain roll out to Lafayette, via Reliez Valley road, is all anyone on two wheels needs for inspiration to get back on the bike in a committed fashion. The windy tromp up Upper Happy Valley road to the Bears then to Pig Farm, inspired many ideas and conversations with my ride conspirator. First, I need to this more often. Second, A "Fur-low" Friday Ride! Is anyone out there up for a regular Friday morning ride? LMK

Mt. Diablo from China Camp

Mt. Diablo viewed from Nike missile site at China Camp

How long is too long? When is enough? The questions may be rhetorical, but we all think about them. Not always voiced, but definitely felt, where is your limit with the outside world? That point we reach when only a ride will do. Or, as in my case, why has it taken so long for us to ride again? Life has its fences and mazes that redirect our intent, derailed intent is never good.

This morning I had the honor to ride with two of the most regular riding partners I have. Two friends that life has given me along my way. At times we all ride together or we divide up into pairs on occasion, depending who has what, going on where. In all we have been riding together for 17 years. Like many of you who have a group you ride with, life flings its arrows and you find each other apart and not really knowing where the other went. By the time you regroup, a month has gone by. And, with that month went all the fitness a forty-something husband, father of three kids and small business operator, can get.

Banging out those miles on the single track of China Camp does not come easy, but you slowly get back into the rhythm of the trail...root...root...turn....root....root...rock....root... root... tree... you free yourself from the handle bar table of life's daily necessities, which are currently causing you to climb slower than you remember. Your eyes open to the trail in front of you and you begin to think, "Why is this not a daily necessity anymore?"

Carbon 29'er Anyone?

2012 Scott Carbon and Alloy twenty-niners are here! Since their introduction two years ago, these bikes have sold out long before the season started and this year is no exception.

The word on the carbon hard tail is PLUSH. The happy Pegasus customer to the left, has been ecstatic about his recent purchase and still cannot believe how comfy his new RC Scale frame set is.
Stop by for test spin... Models in the Aspect 29 series start as low as $520.00. The Scale series are the nicer spec'd models and start at $925.00. Also,  check out the all new Spark 29 full suspension...more to come on that one.

My first impression of this hard tail is "no compromise". It covers the bases with the speed of a 29 and the agility of a 26. Speed and comfort rarely blend in a carbon hard tail.

Mount Diablo 2012

Resolution. I have to say, the aformentioned word was not heard by my ear this year from anyone. How many of you made New Years resolutions?

This was mine. Get up, get the kids out the door, drop them off for school and ride the mountain, all before I have to open the shop. On January 9th, I met my resolve. It has taken since September of last year to do this, but the point is that I finally did it.

Finding inspiration... What is it that finally inspires you to return to something you forgot you needed? The stress of  life gets us off track and meandering in different orbits. That's what happened to me.

Today Mount Diablo held an alien scenery, especially for January. Brown still. Fall has not lost its dry, dead grip and the hardened clay is begging for moisture. My rides these days are painful, slow and painfully slow. Today was no exception, but I did feel better about meeting the morning with two coyotes and a lone buck.  (Having an extra winter layer made the descent one of my better times in a while.)

Who wants to join me this weekend for round two?

May Day Rides - New Shop Hours

Ok, so it really isn't on May Day, but we are officially starting the shop riding season on Wednesday the 4th of May.
Join us for a NEW Wednesday morning ride. This ride will be in addition to our regular riding schedule and will be a permanent ride from May through September. This ride is also a part of our NEW Pegasus / Kovarus Cycling Club and will be attended by members of growing Riding club that all of you should join. If you are looking for a group of non-racers to ride with, this is your group. All abilities, ages, creeds, colors and love orientations are welcome! The Pegasus Staff will also be there, so no worries while out on the road. We are also looking for input on the ride, routes, on or off-road, hills versus flat, etc. The rides will generally be about 35-50 miles at a moderate pace (14-16mph avg.) With the routes changing every week.

Ride departs at 9 am-ish. (for those of you who have never ridden with me ;).

This will be a great way for anyone new to the area to discover our amazing back yard. Make friends, learn how to ride in a group, fix flats and maybe even some roadside emergency tricks!

With this new additional ride, our shop hours on Wednesday will change to 12 noon to 7pm. (normal hours  were 10am to 7pm.)

Remember, we are here to help your riding experience in every way.
